Determination of pollutants with multixenobiotic -resistance inhibiting properties
1995
Abstract Recent evidence indicates that inherent presence of multixenobiotic resistance (MXR) mechanism represents a general biological defence mechanism for protection of organisms against both endogenous and environmental toxins. In aquatic organisms exposed to polluted waters, this P-170 glycoprotein pump also removes ‘new’ man-made toxic chemicals out of cells. Many chemical agents may alter the function of this fragile mechanism. A new class of compounds, referred to as ‘chemosensitizers’, deserve a top rank among environmentally-hazardous chemicals, since they block this basic natural defence mechanism. The authors measured the concentration of such MXR-inhibiting substances by two me…
128 Development of a job-exposure matrix (JEM) to describe pesticide exposure in Spanish workers (1996–2005)
2013
Objectives Pesticides are intensively used in Spain in a wide range of economic activities such as agriculture, farming, wood treatments or pest control, reaching in 2005 a consumption of more than 100,000 ton/year. Exposure to these substances has been proven to have negative effects on human health. However, there is little information available regarding the levels and frequency of exposure for workers, or the job titles associated with the worst exposure indicators. This study aimed to collect the available information on occupational pesticide exposure in Spain as a job-exposure matrix (JEM). Methods The work was carried out in the context of MatEmESp Project, which aims to build a Spa…
CASA-Mot in mammals: an update
2017
Sperm motility is one of the most widely used parameters of sperm quality. Computer-aided sperm motility analysis (CASA-Mot) systems were developed to reduce the subjectivity of sperm motility assessment, and have had broad scientific and practical acceptance. In this review, the sources of variation and current applications of this technology and its relationships with other sperm quality tests are described in detail. Despite remarkable advances in the technique, there is still great need for standardisation in many species, and the numerous factors that affect the results make it difficult to provide universally accepted criteria for classifying semen samples based on sperm motility char…
Mechanism-based selection of compounds for the development of innovative in vitro approaches to hepatotoxicity studies in the LIINTOP project.
2010
The 6th European Framework Programme project LIINTOP was specifically raised to optimise and provide established protocols and experimental in vitro models for testing intestinal and liver absorption, metabolism and toxicity of molecules of pharmacological interest. It has been focused on some of the most promising existing liver and intestine in vitro models with the aim of further improving their performance and thus taking them to a pre-normative research stage. Regarding the specific area of the liver, a first basic approach was the optimisation of in vitro hepatic models and the development and optimisation of in vitro approaches for toxicity screening. New advanced technologies have b…
A highly selective, Hg2+ triggered hydrogelation: modulation of morphology by chemical stimuli
2013
We report the first Hg(2+) selective hydrogelation by 4'-[4-(4-aminophenyl)phenyl]-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine. The gel showed remarkable response towards specific chemical agents such as benzo-18-crown-6 ether and K(+) which enabled extensive modulation of the gel morphology.
First report on the presence of Alloxan in bleached flour by LC-MS/MS method
2017
Abstract In this work the presence of Alloxan in bread, pastry and cake bleached flour was investigate in order to verify possible risk for consumers related to the use of chemicals for flour bleaching. A selective UHPLC–MS/MS method has been developed and validated for the purpose. Alloxan is one of the possible minor side products of oxidation after chemical bleaching of wheat flours, when several chemical agents are used. One hundred and seventy-five flour samples were analyzed for Alloxan determination. The validation of the method was performed in accordance with the ISO/IEC/EN 17025 for linearity, detection limit, quantification limit, accuracy, precision and ruggedness determination.…
